Towering 14 metres above the water, it draws visitors from across the North Island to admire its scale and detail. In 1976, master carver Matahi Whakataka Brightwell envisioned the tattooed face of Ngatoroirangi while paddling past a rock alcove, fulfilling his grandmothers wish to create a lasting connection to their ancestors.
