メキシコとアメリカの国境に近いテキサスの町リオ・ブラボー。本書は、アイデンティティと地理が交錯する、絶え間ない緊張と移住の場であるこの中間地帯に佇むような一冊である。270キロにも及ぶ河川は、この物語における無言の主人公である。川に接する人々を形作っているが、その姿はほとんど登場しないという、捉え所のない視覚的なストーリーを組み立てている。飾り気のないポートレイト、質素なインテリア、傷にまみれた風景を通し、被写体は不確かに交錯する影の中で、時には何年も待ち続ける、宙に浮いた移住の時間を捉えている。
