These beautiful little boxes are made from a wood known as 'huang-huali' - a tropical hardwood that is now quite rare and highly prized by the Chinese
As was the practice throughout China where clothes were folded inside cabinets rather than hung on rails
this warm elm piece is a reproduction of desks that were common in China during the later Qing dynasty
It also features the 'plank top' lid and blackened brass hardware that are seen throughout our Chinese Country Elm Furniture range

According to Chinese tradition cabinets like these would at one time have been presented as part of a bride's wedding dowry, the contents of the cabinet would have included such items as fabrics, clothes and silks.
